EnglishIntroduction: Entering to University is a process of adjustment that some students resolve successfully, but other do not. While the capabilities of social and emotional adjustment of students are essential, the educational environment they perceive about the University has a trascendental influence on their academic life. The Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) is the instrument that has been used in various countries and contexts to assess the educational environment (AE). Objectives: To assess AE of undergraduate students at a private university, using a Spanish version of the DREEM questionnaire and relate it to their academic performance. Material and Method: Quantitative, non-experimental cross-sectional and correlational study. DREEM was applied during 2013 to 118 first year medical students and the results were correlated with academic performance. Results: After relating the academic performance and the perception of the educational environment as a whole, it was found that the set of dimensions analyzed by DREEM are associated with 8.63% of variability of the curricular average. Furthermore, it was concluded that of all factors evaluated in the perception of AE, the academic experience of students has proven to be an important predictor regarding curricular average, with 9.54% of variability in that average. Conclusions: Finding this relationship between AE perception and academic performance, it is proposed to generate instances where students can share in more relaxed environments, not so demanding, and where they feel they are not alone on this path, that they are being accompanied, and that they are being valued for their environment.
