The invention relates to a deformation element (1) for absorbing kinetic energy, as it is free, for example in a crash two collision partners. The deformation element (1) includes a in its longitudinal axis (2) extending the hollow body (3) having a first end (4) and a thereto axially spaced second end (5). The first end (4) encircling the first edge (6) of the hollow body (3) has a smaller circumference than the second end (5) encircling the second edge (7) and the first edge (6) and second edge ( 7) connecting surface lines form the shell of the hollow body (3). To improve the energy absorption and for the simple and economic production of such a deformation element (1) is proposed according to the invention, that the second edge (7) has a course in which in the radial direction with respect to the longitudinal axis (2) alternately merge into each convex bulges ( 8) and concave indentations (9) are arranged.
