This paper was begun in 1747 by the Chalmers family in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden, and under various titles continued to publish until 1957. Up to the 1870s it appeared once a week, and by the 1830s had a circulation of more than 2,200, which was substantially higher than those of its rivals in the region. Politically, the paper was conservative throughout the nineteenth century.
