Introduction: Central and Eastern European Perspectives on Energy Transition

2021
This chapter provides a general introduction to the issue of energy transition within the European Union and highlights the role of member states in reaching the common goal of carbon-neutrality by 2050. It introduces Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) as an under-researched region that plays an important role in the energy transition process by providing opposition to the Commission’s ambitious ideas. While the region is, in general, not very supportive of the EU’s demanding goals in areas that are connected to energy transition, the devil is in the details, and therefore the book unpacks within individual chapters the CEE ‘box’ that enables it to look closer at the region and see difference among countries that are usually considered to be a homogenous group.
