How to Optimize Steel Frameworks

This paper presents the details of a design synthesis strategy to conduct computer-automated design of least-weight structural steel frameworks, where members are automatically sized using commercial standard steel sections in full conformance with governing steel design code provisions for strength/stability and stiffness. A design example from professional practice is presented to illustrate the scope and effectiveness of the optimization technique.
