Clinical statistics and surgical procedures in the urology Department of Fukuoka University Hospital in 2000 and 2001

2002
The outpatients, inpatients and surgical procedures performed in our department in 2000 and 2001 were statistically analyzed. The results were as follows: 1) The total number of outpatients was 1,256 in 2000 and 1,271 in 2001 respectively, which showed a slight increase. In contrast, the number of inpatients decreased from 538 (1999) to 491 in 2000 and to 470 in 2001. 2) The most frequent diseases of the inpatients were urogenital tumors (34.9% in 2000 and 38.3% in 2001), followed by urogenital anomalies (30.2%, 26.1%). These two categories comprised approximately two thirds of all inpatients. Regarding urolithiasis, a slight decrease was observed. 3) The number of surgical procedures was 449 in 2000 and 392 in 2001 respectively. The most frequent procedure was a transurethral resection of bladder tumors, followed by a dorsal slit of the prepuce, a radical nephrectomy, orchiopexy and an anti-reflux operation in decreasing order. 4) The number of laparoscopic or retroperitoneoscopic procedures to treat diseases in the adrenal gland, kidney and upper urinary tract also markedly increased during this two-year period. The adoption of laparoscopic surgery for renal tumors also showed a dramatic increase owing to recent technical advances.
