Solubility of hydrogen halides in organic compounds containing oxygen. IV. Solubility of hydrogen chloride in glycols and ethers

2007
At temperatures from 50 to about 0° the solubility of hydrogen chloride in glycols appears to relate to the basic function of only one atom of oxygen, the other being involved in intervening intramolecular hydrogen bonding. At lower temperatures the second atom of oxygen participates in the association with the solute. Opposing inductive and steric factors influence the solubility of hydrogen chloride in ethers. Relevant correlations are discussed.
