A CASE OF MUCOCELE OF THE APPENDIX FOUND BY INTUSSUSCEPTION

1997
A 37-year-old woman was admitted to the faculty because of right lower abdominal pain. A soft mass measuring 5cm in diameter with an unclear border was palpated in the right side of the umbilical area. Intussusception was diagnosed, since abdominal ultrasonography and CT showed a stratiform image of concentric circle and barium enema study revealed a round defect in the ascending colon. It was impossible to reduce by barium enema and an operation was carried out. During operation a 2×8cm swollen appendix was exposed by the hand manipulation, the root of which was spherically projected in the cavity of cecum and was thought to be the top of intussusception. The ileocecal resection was carried out, because a posibility to malignant disease could not be ruled out. Resected specimen was mucocele of the appendix that was filled with geratinoid substance in the dilated cavity. Histopathological diagnosis was mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix. This case was thought to be rare that mucocele of the appendix presented with intussusception.
