Common gastrointestinal problems in pregnancy

2014
HG is distressing, and any further distress may affect the psychological disposition of the mother, and attempts should be made to provide assurances about the wellbeing of the baby. Fetal wellbeing in this context may be difficult to assess depending on the gestational age; however, women may be assured by knowing that miscarriage in patients with HG is reported to be extremely rare (Burd, 2012). Older studies investigating maternal and fetal outcomes revealed no differences in birth weight, gestational age, preterm delivery, Apgar scores, perinatal mortality, incidence of fetal anomalies, and growth retardation between hyperemetic patients and the general population (Hallack et al, 1996; Tsang et al, 1996). There is recent evidence to suggest that HG may be associated with higher incidence of low birth weight, being small for gestational age, and prematurity (Veenendaal et al, 2011).
