The Effect of Overweight and Obesity on Blood Pressure, Fasting Serum Glucose and Serum Lipids of Children

2004
Objective To explore the effect of different body fat levels on blood pressure, fasting serum glucose(FSG)and serum lipids, and to provide evidence for developing nutritional education. Methods Height, weight, blood pressure(BP)were measured of a cluster sampling of 933 rural children aged 7-14 years in Hebei province. Their FSG, TC, TG, HDL- C were also determined with the fasting blood samples. LDL- C was calculated based on Fried wald formula. The children were divided into three groups according to weight-for-height: overweight and obesity group, normal group, low weight group. The differences were compared in the levels of BP, FSG and serum lipids among three groups. Results The prevalence rate of overweight and obesity was 16.83% among children surveyed. There was no significant difference between different ages and sexes. Overweight and obesity group had higher BP, FSG and TG and lower HDL - C as compared with the other two groups. The prevalence of higher BP, higher TG and lower HDL - C in the overweight and obesity group was significantly higher than in the other groups. Conclusion Childhood overweight and obesity are correlated to higher BP, FSG and serum lipids
