Fate of lime-based amendments applied for improving freshwater and seawater aquatic environments

1993
Abstract The fate and chemical forms of lime after application in an aquatic environment were studied for the duration of 12 weeks. In freshwater, critical compounds were CaCO 3 and Ca(OH) 2 ; relative composition of CaCO 3 in precipitants was increasing between weeks 2 and 8, and then reached approximately 60%. In seawater, CaCO 3 , CaSO 4 · 2H 2 O and Mg(OH) 2 were recognized as critical constituents; composition of CaCO 3 showed maximum between weeks 2 and 6, and CaSO 4 · 2H 2 O began to increase from week 8. Final compositions of three compounds were 66.7% for Mg(OH) 2 , 19.7% for CaSO 4 · 2H 2 O and 13.6% for CaCO 3 .
