Disparities in factors influencing perception of wetland benefits: Evidence from South West Nigeria

2017
One of the pillars of sustainable development is social inclusion. Such inclusion allows for greater efficiency, effectiveness and equity. However, successful inclusion and participation of the people hovers on their perception of environmental benefits. This research therefore contributes to knowledge by revealing the determinants of perception of wetland benefits. Primary data collected through a personally administered questionnaire were used here. Descriptive statistics was used in computing the perceived benefit index while the estimation of an ordered and generalized ordered logit model was employed to analyse the factors that influence the perception of wetland benefits. The result of the ordered logit regression model reveals that household size, wetland income and years of stay around the wetland have positive effect while total income and worth of asset exert a negative influence on perception of wetland benefits. The generalized ordered regression model indicates that different variables are responsible for moderate and high perception
