Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy During Cesarean Section: A Case Series

Abstract Background: Symptomatic or complicated gallstone disease during pregnancy often requires surgical treatment. When surgical management can be deferred after delivery, laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be performed concurrently with cesarean delivery. Cases: During a period of 2 years (2009–2011) 3 pregnant women presented with acute cholecystitis. They all underwent cesarean delivery and laparoscopic cholecystectomy immediately after. Results: In all cases, the operation was uneventful. No major or minor postoperative complications were observed. The mean length of stay was 3 days. Conclusions: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy immediately after cesarean section is a safe and efficient procedure, with low morbidity, rapid recovery, better cosmetic results, and beneficial effect on lactation.
