First and second order corrections to the magnetic moments of nuclei using realistic interactions

Abstract First and second order corrections to the magnetic moments of nuclei near closed shells are calculated using the semi-realistic hard core Kallio-Kolltveit interaction. While configurational admixture to first, second or higher orders in perturbation theory is not the sole agency producing corrections to the Schmidt values, for most nuclei it accounts for much of the inward deviation from the Schmidt lines. For nuclei like 17 O, 41 Ca where there is no first-order correction to the magnetic moment configurational admixture and second-order perturbation theory must be included in an analysis of the experimental deviation. It is found that for 17 O the second-order effect is too large, and another mechanism working in the opposite direction is required, while for 41 Ca the second-order effect accounts for the experimental deviation.
