Calvert Cliffs volume and cost reduction program: {open_quotes}an update{close_quotes}

1995
Baltimore Gas & Electric`s (BGE) Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (CCNPP) is a two unit PWR located approximately 60 miles south of Baltimore, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay. Both units are of Combustion Engineering design, Unit I began commercial operation in 1975 and Unit 2 in 1977. At the 1994 EPRI International Conference, BGE presented waste minimization initiatives undertaken and subsequent results achieved. Several utilities were participating in EPRI`s Tailored Collaboration initiative for waste minimization. BGE like many other utilities, found its low level radioactive waste (LLRW) streams comprised of a wide range of incinerable/non-incinerable and reusable/launderable materials. What was realized was that there were significant cost savings opportunities with minor changes in materials used. A Low-Level Waste Process Improvement Team (LLWPIT) was organized with top management support. Members were selected from various organizations which routinely worked in the Radiologically Controlled Area (RCA) of the site, as well as representatives from Training, Public Information and Procurement. It was soon obvious there were too many low-level waste minimization {open_quotes}opportunities{close_quotes}needing attention. So {open_quotes}sub-committees{close_quotes}were established focusing on the priority issues of Resin/Filters, Leaking Components, Procurement, Communication, and Site Awareness.
