SCATTERING STATES OF THE 4He SYSTEM

1972
Publisher Summary This chapter describes the scattering states of the 4 He system. Internuclear potential model has been used in many calculations concerning light nuclei. The chapter further describes the 4 He ground state and all scattering states corresponding to two particle breakup channels. There is no resonance above the d–d threshold but a very rapid decrease of the phase with increasing energy. This may be resonance below threshold. In any case, the elastic S-matrix elements seem to dominate the elastic d–d scattering at extremely low energies. Contributions resulting from higher multipoles and from magnetic radiation are neglected. The results show that the breakup process mainly leads to asymptotic states with channel spin S=0 and orbital angular momentum L=l. Asymptotic states with channel spin S=l give practically no contribution to the cross section. The absolute values of the cross sections are very sensitive to the wave functions used.
