효율적인 교양생명과학 교육방안 연구

2018
Biology brought the era of Omics such as Genomics and Proteomics to the world when it was combined with ICT and NT. During the 4th Industrial Revolution, biology has continued creating new technologies merging with other fields of Science and Technology and has become one of the major fields for the future of human race. Unfortunately, students and biology faculty members are not satisfied with current non-majors’ biology courses due to lack of proper textbooks, unfamiliarity with terminology, too much learning volume, and standardization of lecture quality, etc. Without solutions for these arisen problems, biology-based creativity allied with other technologies cannot be expected during the 4th Industrial Revolution era, however, studies have not been conducted well to establish educational guidelines with new concepts and develop effective educational methods for non-biology majoring students. In this study we tried to establish new approaches to improve scientific literacy for non-biology majors by analyzing papers published previously, educational direction in the world leading universities, changes in secondary education policy in Korea, and undergraduates’ perception of science in biology courses. As a result, we suggested several strategies for enhancing scientific literacy for non-biology majors: 1. Topics to improve biology concept and its’ applicability, 2. Relocation of customized courses by level, 3. Teaching methods based on the basic terminology for concept formulation, 4. Classes considering the major of students. We also provided some examples of ‘Terminology for understanding basic concepts of life’, ‘Biology terms and topics related to everyday life’, and ‘Questions provoking intellectual curiosity and interest’ for successful education in general biology.
