PULSED POWER MOLTEN SALT BATTERY DgVEU)PME

1990
The lithium/chlorine electrochemical couple is a very attractive candidate for the pulse-power battery application as it potentially offers exceedingly high power densities. Technochem Company has developed a novel activation technique for producing high-rate chlorine cathodes made from porous graphite and carbon materials. Results obtained with these electrodes in molten-salt cells are discussed in this paper. In molten LiC1-KC1 at 45OoC, these chlorine electrodes deliver a remarkable pulse-power performance, 2 0 -2 5 Watts /cd. The IR-free cell polarization with Li-Al/chlorine cells appears to be ohmic which is desirable for the pulse power application.
