The article describes problematic situation, in which the concept of recognition first appears among the third generation of philosophers of the Frankfurt School. Sociocultural and political conditions that caused the crisis of critical theory in the late twentieth century are presented. The author claims that critical theory has lost its viability and normative appeal because of the incremental growth of individualism in the postmodern society. The competitive struggle between critical theory and schizoanalysis is highlighted. The author concludes that the idea of recognition was brought to the forefront by Axel Honneth in order to reinvigorate critical theory and to overcome the limitations stemming from economic individualism.
