Farming as a Business

2021
Farming is a livelihood activity, especially for the poor in Africa. Over the years, poverty alleviation interventions have often aimed at improving farming activities in rural households to improve productivity and to aid in commercializing farming. Rural farm activities are however hardly recorded, often resulting in underestimation or overestimation of cost and benefits of farming. This chapter discusses the nature of agricultural goods that makes the agricultural sector unique; and the balances in production that are needed in making farming a business and a sustainable venture in Africa. We conclude that sustainable farming is possible if agripreneurs adhere to agronomic and business protocols without endangering the availability of resources for future use.
