Finite element modelling of multi-layer composites using microCT scan results

2011
Three dimensional fabrics and woven performs are gradually emerging as a new generation of carbon fabric with specialist aerospace applications. These materials have higher through thickness stiffness and strength compared to two-dimensional carbon fabrics; however, their in-plane properties may be reduced. The increased use of these materials is accompanied by the need to better understanding and predict their properties. A method of obtaining better understanding of these materials, through the use of an X-ray Micro-Computed Tomography (microCT) scanner to aid creation of geometries for finite element models, is presented. The modelling is done rapidly using an automated meshing routine designed to convert microCT image sets to voxel finite element models.
