Interventional Procedures Reducing the Needs for Conventional Surgery

2021
Interventional radiology (IR) is a medical subspecialty that performs various minimally invasive procedures using medical imaging for guidance. IR performs both therapeutic and diagnostic procedures through tiny incisions. Interventional oncology (IO) is an emerging subspecialty of IR that “uses image-guided procedures to manage patients with cancer.” IO is the fastest-growing field in IR: essential in managing patients with hereditary cancer syndrome, it is involved in the diagnosis/treatment of the malignancy or related complications and palliation. IO provides new treatment possibilities for patients with hereditary cancer syndrome. Combined with conventional oncological treatments, IO has excellent therapeutic potential. In this section, the role of IR in the management of hereditary cancer syndromes is discussed.
