Classification of the Vestibular efferent periphery according to CGRP immunostaining Pattern

The staining pattern of calcitonin gene related peptide immunoreactivity(CGRP ir) was examined in the vestibular efferent periphery of the rat.A modified method of pre embedding immunoelectron microscopy was applied to accomplish this study.The vestibular efferent periphery of the rat can be divided into three subgroups according to their staining patterns of CGRP ir.They are:(1)CGRP ir positive nerve ending;(2)CGRP ir negative nerve ending;or(3)CGRP ir positive with regional negative periphery.These data demonstrate that the vestibular efferent system may consist of three different origins.
