Surgery and Hemostasis

2015
Abstract Surgery and trauma present major stresses on the hemostatic system. Paradoxically, hemorrhage and thrombosis are both increased. Working together, surgeons and hematologists have successfully explored surgery and hemostasis including the effect of one on the other. This collaboration has increased understanding, treatment, and safety in our patients. This chapter discusses the progression of surgical procedures in hemophiliacs from proscription to prescription, preoperative hemostatic testing, prophylaxis against surgical venous thromboembolism, and consultative management of surgical patients experiencing hemorrhage.
