Should HIV positive mothers breastfeed

It is one of the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) that reflection of practice is carried out. Though I have not personally looked after a breastfeeding HIV woman since starting midwifery training, it is a topic that has fascinated me for a long time. Having moved from London where there is a high prevalence of HIV positive patients to the North-West of England where HIV prevalence is low, I am interested to find out what advice midwives should be giving to HIV positive mothers who wish to breastfeed.
