Parametric Control of Separated Flows

2013
Flow separation is studied around a circular cylinder in a crossflow. Applied passive and active flow-control techniques are based on the developed strategy of turbulence scaling using mechanical and thermal vortex generators. Symmetric and asymmetric flow excitation with spanwise arrays of O-rings and spherical disturbers/plasma sources is analyzed. Numerical simulation showed the initiated regular vortical structure sustained for certain combinations of basic flow and control parameters. Adequately matched experiments demonstrated a possibility to delay flow separation and, accordingly, to improve the aerodynamic performance of a bluff body.
