Acute phase protein and cytokine levels in serum and saliva: A comparison of detectable levels and correlations in a depressed and healthy adolescent sample (vol 34, pg 164, 2013)

2020
The authors regret that upon further inspection of the data from this study, although the four acute phase proteins reported in the paper were correct in ng/ml, the remaining cytokine values had been written in pg/ml but reported as ng/ml. Therefore, the mean, SD, and ranges reported in Tables 2 and 3 of the manuscript have values for cytokines that are 1000× too high. The acute phase proteins (APP, first four rows of Tables 2 and 3) are all still correct. The remaining cytokines needed to be reduced by 1000× in order to be correctly reported in ng/ml. We have corrected the values in Tables 2 and 3 (attached) and continued to report in units of ng/ml, but simply divided the cytokine values by 1000. We have retained all decimal points for sensitivity, and so readers could easily convert to pg/ml if they wish, without losing sensitivity by rounding to ng/ml. We have reviewed the rest of the text of the manuscript and determined that no changes to the text are required because raw values (means, SD or ranges) are not reported for cytokines outside of Tables 2 and 3. Furthermore, the figures are all still correct because only CRP values were presented in Figures (and those values were correctly reported in ng/ml). Finally, the conclusions of the paper remain the same. All statistical analyses were correlations between salivary and serum levels of cytokines, and these statistics will not change because the units were reported consistently across serum and saliva, it was only that they should have (both) been pg/ml instead of ng/ml. However, readers wishing to use our mean raw values to aggregate (e.g., to examine norms or in a meta-analysis) will need the correct values and units reported here. The authors would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.
