FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF TRANSDERMAL DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM FOR IBUPROFEN

In the present study the transdermal patch of Ibuprofen was formulated. . The drug is usually administered as the racemic compound, but preparations containing only the S (þ)-enantiomers (dexibuprofen) are available in some countries. Ibuprofen is usually given as the free acid but various salts, esters, and other complexes are also used. The pKa of ibuprofen is in the range of 4.5–4.6. Ibuprofen is well absorbed throughout the gastrointestinal tract and is therefore suitable as a modeldrug in relation to study of colon-specific formulations. The elimination half-life of ibuprofen is about 2 hours. Therapeutic concentrations in plasma range from 5 to 50 mg/l.
