First-order Ocean Surface Cross Section for Bistatic HFSWR Incorporating a Horizontal Oscillation Motion Model

2019
In order to investigate the characteristic of sea clutter, the first-order bistatic high frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) ocean surface cross section has been mathematically derived for the case of a transmitting antenna being installed on a floating platform incorporating a horizontal oscillation motion model. The horizontal oscillation motion model includes sway, surge and yaw. Compared with previous work for surge or sway, yaw results in a time-varying direction of the platform motion. Simulation results show that the combined motion induced peaks are also need be considered for a floating platform with a horizontal oscillation motion model. These motion-induced peaks are symmetrical in frequency. Furthermore, the platform motion can be viewed as the frequency modulation for radar echoes. This work provides a theoretical foundation for future investigation and applications using floating platform bistatic HFSWR.
