Response of linseed (Linum usitatissium) and Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) to integrated nitrogen management in Central plain zone of Uttar Pradesh

A field experiment was carried out during rabi 2013–14 at Kanpur to evaluate the effect of integrated nitrogen management (INM) on seed yield, quality and nutrient uptake of linseed (Linum usitatissium L.) and Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czernj and Coss.) in Central plain zone of Uttar Pradesh using different combinations of INM. The application 75% RDN + 25% N through farmyard manure (FYM) + Azotobactor + phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) was found significantly superior in terms of yield, protein and oil content as well as NPK uptake in both linseed and Indian mustard over the plots receiving 100% RDN, and 50% RDN + 50% N through FYM + Azotobactor + PSB treatments. Further, grain and straw yield was recorded 10.7 and 19.8% higher in linseed and 6.4 and 9.7% in Indian mustard, respectively, under above said treatment over 100% RDN, and 22.8 and 38.9%more inlinseed and 11.44 and 147% more in Indian mustard, respectively, over 50% RDN + 50% N through FYM + Azotobactor + PSB. The oil content was markedly reduced with increase in RDN through chemical fertilizer but reverse trend was observed in case of protein content. Nutrient uptake in terms of NPK in seed and straw of linseed and Indian mustard was recorded significantly higher with the plots that received 75% RDN + 25% N through FYM + Azotobactor + PSB over other two INM treatments.
