Discovering Factors that Influence Physician Scientist Success in Academic Medical Centers

This study investigates factors influencing success of highly trained and talented professionals in large organizational settings, specifically physician scientists in Academic Medical Centers. These organizations and individuals are drivers of healthcare in the United States. Translation of scientific discovery to the practice of medicine moves at an astoundingly slow and ineffective rate. We must understand moreover what contributes to physician scientist success to speed up this translation. Therefore, inductive grounded theory identified emergent factors from detailed experiential accounts of 31 individuals, at various experience levels, holding both MD and PhD degrees. Results indicate that role balance, autonomy, organizational support, teamwork, life cycle mentorship, and relational capacity are the most relevant factors impacting success.
