Laparoscopic Transhiatal Resection for Distal Esophageal and Gastro-Esophageal Junction Cancer
2021
Conventional surgical treatment of esophageal cancers through thoracotomy is characterized by a high rate of complications, especially pulmonary infections. Transhiatal approach for distal esophageal and GEJ cancers seems an adequate approach to decrease pulmonary complications by avoiding the thoracic route. This approach is especially indicated for type 2 of Siewert and in frail patients with distal esophageal and GEJ cancers. Laparoscopic approach may offer short term advantages.
