Hydrogen inventory control for vanadium by Ti metal powder mixing in molten salt FLiNaK

2017
Abstract Titanium powder mixed molten salt FLiNaK, which has larger hydrogen solubility than that pure FLiNaK, was investigated for its capability to mitigate hydrogen inventory in vanadium, in expectation of molten salt/vanadium alloy liquid blanket. The hydrogen fluence from gas to vanadium plate through molten salt containing μm- and nm- size Ti powder was quantified as hydrogen inventory in the vanadium plate. The experiment was performed at 823 K, feeding hydrogen gas for 10–1000 Pa. FLiNaK containing nm-size Ti powder showed less hydrogen inventory than pure one, whereas μm-size Ti powder showed less difference. nmTi-FLiNaK was found to be an effective buffer for hydrogen transfer.
