Applying OpenStreetMap GIS Data to the Discrete Event Simulation Environment ED for Realistic Transportation Models

2012
Discrete event simulation is used for solving a vast number of problems connected to logistics. Addressing transportation logistics and supply chain models, the simulation of )road based) networks and appropriate driving times was always only roughly performed. This was due to the fact that it was not easily possible to integrate exact geographic information system (GPS) data. The current development exactly targets this shortcoming. OpenStreetMap data is used to automatically generate a realistic transportation network between given endpoints and applies corresponding driving times to the sub paths. The graphic environment of the discrete event simulation Enterprise Dynamics supports the display of these routes and computes travel times based on the given data. Using this technology, regional distribution systems especially can be investigated in more detail and improved.
