The Manchurian Incident, known in China as the September 18th Incident (jiuyiba
shibian), and the Marco Polo Bridge Incident (Logonqian shibian), also known
as the July 7th Incident (qiqi shibian), are the two key events that marked the
beginning of Japan’s invasion of first Manchuria in 1931 and subsequently China
proper in 1937. Chinese history textbooks describe both events in great detail. In
their account of the 1931 Manchurian Incident, they focus on three key points.
