Evaluation of the state of long-operating concrete dams with no or limited monitoring and measuring instruments on them

1. An evaluation of the state of long-operating concrete dams not equipped with MMIs or equipped with a limited number should be carried out by comparing the observed monitored parameters related to criteria of the safe state and reliable operation of structures with the maximum allowable values (MAVs) of these parameters. 2. The MAVs of monitored parameters are determined on the basis of retrospective calculations of structures and on the basis of analyzing the data of long-term instrumental and visual observations. 3. The MAVs of the monitored parameters can be expressed both by quantitative and qualitative quantities. The latter are the only ones for structures not equipped with MMIs. 4. In the case of a lack of information for evaluating the state of a long-operating structure and its further reliable operation, it should be equipped with additional MMIs, and in certain cases special experimental investigations should be conducted on it.
