2018
The purpose of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of research on the effects of yoga in order to reveal the effect of yoga and to draw implications for its effective application. 36 papers were selected among the studies focused on effects of hatha yoga on variable groups of physical and physiological functions, the period from 2003 to 2012. After coding 36 theses that were selected, a total of 299 effect sizes were obtained and outliers were treated. The collected data were analyzed with F-test using the SPSS 18.0 program to check out if there are significant differences in the collective effect sizes set by mediator variables. The overall mean effect size of yoga appeared to be .751 and the variable group of physiological functions was more effective than that of physical functions. Also, the largest effect size was seen in the 20-30s age group, for 13-16 weeks, and for 50-80 minutes. But exercise frequency showed no statistically significant difference. The conclusion from this research is, because yoga is effective in variable groups of physical and physiological functions it will be necessary to develop various exercise programs that enhance a healthy body and mind through yoga.
