From Atlantic Canada to the World: Initial Teacher Education and International Teaching in Atlantic Canadian Universities

2018
Increasing numbers of Canadian educators are choosing to pursue at least a portion of their careers in international contexts. This paper reports on a portion of a multi phase investigation designed to address four questions related to initial teacher education (ITE) and the increased international mobility of Canadian teachers: What competencies do teachers need to teach internationally? How do teaching opportunities in international contexts inform or shape Canadian initial teacher education (ITE) programs? To what extent are competencies for international teaching addressed in Canadian ITE programs? Can competencies for international teaching be developed and/or measured?
