Production of polymer having fluorescent pendant groups

PURPOSE: To label a polymer with fluorescent pendant groups by the derivation of pre-existing polymer and to thereby monitor it. CONSTITUTION: There are provided a process for producing a polymer labeled with a fluorescent pendent group by the (trans)amidation derivation of a preexisting polymer having carbonyl-type pendant groups, a polymer having amide pendant groups, wherein the amide nitrogen is substituted with fluorescent moieties and a polymer having (sulfonated)naphthalene pendant moieties substituted on amide nitrogen.
