Optimization of Scheduling and Thermal Generation Operations Using Firefly Algorithm

2020
Each operating generating unit has different input and output characteristics. To make the operation of the power system run optimally required scheduling of each operating power unit. The scheduling of power units on the power system is known as unit commitment. In carrying out the unit commitment process there are several things to be aware of, such as startup (hot and cold start), production cost, power generation range, and others. The study proposes a firefly algorithm method to complete the unit commitment scheduling process. The reliability of the firefly algorithm will be tested through 2 system tests, the first system uses 4 units of thermal generators with a time period of 8 hours and the second system uses 10 units of thermal generators with a time period of 24 hours. With firefly algorithm method, it is expected to solve the problem of scheduling unit commitment well and obtain operating costs from more efficient generating units. The results of the firefly algorithm simulation will be compared to other methods in the case of unit commitment.
