THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY

2016
188 pp., both Cambridge, Mass., Harvard U.P. These two vols, which are abundantly documented, try to bring together the some times scanty evidence about a subject which has long needed full treatment. The author deals with such topics as the role of songs, both sacred and profane, in the drama, the constitution of the en sembles, the part probably played by non-vocal music. The vols are the result of painstaking research, and the author has acquitted himself well of a very difficult task. Elliott Forsyth, La Tragedie franfaise de Jodelle a Corneille (1553-1640): le theme de la ven geance, Nizet, 1962, 484 pp., brings together a great deal of in formation which was hitherto scattered, and is a substantial con tribution to our knowledge of the pre-classical theatre. Bis A, xxii, 9 (1962), publ. a summary of M. M. Gras, Robert Gamier, son art et sa methode, a dissertation submitted to the Univ. ot Wisconsin.
