The Role of Food Safety in Food Security/Defense

2009
Modern approaches to food safety management significantly help address food security/defense challenges. Whether a contamination of the food supply is accidental or intentional, food safety related strategies to isolate, identify, and eliminate food hazard(s) will prove helpful. The historical development of preventive, process-oriented food control approaches includes the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) food safety system, which incidentally can help food professionals ensure food security. As one situation- and commodity-specific example further illustrates, food safety systems can contribute to broader food security/defense goals in the agricultural and food industry.
