Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation

2020
Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent cardiac rhythm disorder. The age-adjusted prevalence of AF is higher in men compared to women; overall prevalence is similar due to higher prevalence in women over 75 years of age. AF is significantly related with the risk of stroke , heart failure , and development of dementia. Moreover, AF increases mortality and risk of sudden cardiac death . It significantly decreases the quality of life. Catheter ablation of AF has been established as effective and safe treatment of AF, especially in symptomatic patients with paroxysmal AF. There are not any differences in recommendations and indications of CA of AF between men and women. The same techniques for both men and women are primarily employed. Nevertheless, there are some differences that influence the procedure and the outcome of the procedure. Women were thought to be at higher risk of complications of AF ablation compared to men; both the overall risk and the difference can be reduced by modern technology and better experience and knowledge.
