Absorption chiller-heaters have widely been used for cooling and heating in public buildings, due to government energy policy in Korea since 1980s. However, the Coefficient of Performance (COP) has still been limited to about COP 1.2 even for high efficient equipment. In addition, the sequence of operations for such absorption chiller-heaters with different capacity and efficiency has not been sufficiently studied under actual operational conditions. This study analyzed the operational characteristic of absorption chiller-heaters for a public office building in Winter. As a result, it is found that the sequence of operations of absorption chiller-heaters was scheduled to provide a certain range of hot water (HW) supply temperature up to 70℃ but not enough to maintain the average return air temperature of the AHU(CAV) for the typical floors of the case-study building. Therefore, it is recommended that the sequence of operations of absorption chiller-heaters should be coupled with equipment capacity and AHU"s operation as well as equipment efficiency, to effectively improve indoor thermal comfort and overall system efficiency.
