Acquired ocular toxoplasmosis in pregnancy

We describe the management of a case of acquired ocular toxoplasmosis that occurred in the first trimester of pregnancy. A 27 year old apparently healthy Pakistani woman, at 9 weeks’ gestation, presented to the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre with a 1 week history of blurred vision in the left eye. She had no past ocular problems. Her first uncomplicated pregnancy was 2 years previously. On examination, the best corrected visual acuities were 6/6 in each eye. The anterior segments were normal and the intraocular pressures were 16 mm Hg right eye, 14 mm Hg left eye. Funduscopy showed a diffuse, elevated white lesion in the left retina half a disc diameter in size located one disc diameter superior to the fovea (Fig 1).
