Electrocatalytic Performance of Carbon Supported Pt Catalyst for Ammonia Oxidation in Organic Electrolyte

2011
The electrocatalytic performance of the carbon supported Pt (Pt/C) catalyst electrode for the NH(3) oxidation in the current type of the electrochemical NH(3) sensor with the organic electrolyte was investigated. It was found that in the mixed electrolyte of propylene carbonate (PC) and 1, 2-dimethoxyethane(DME) with low viscosity, Pt/C catalyst electrode has good electrocatalytic activity and stability as well as good selectivity and short response time for the NH(3) oxidation. In addition, the sensor is resistant to the high temperature and low relative humidity. Thus, PC/DME mixed organic electrolyte can be used as the electrolyte in the current type of the electrochemical NH(3) sensor. It can solve the invalidation problem of water electrolyte due to the water evaporation and prolong sensor lifetime.
