Urban Social Environment
2011
The social environment is an integral component of urban environments. Its implications for health may help to explain the apparent health advantage of urban versus nonurban areas in some geographic regions. This article focuses on key elements of the social environment (social capital and social disorder/disorganization) in the urban setting, and the posited mechanisms and empirically demonstrated associations of these attributes with the health of populations and individuals. A growing empirical literature has explored their associations with a range of health outcomes. Establishing the linkages between major features of the urban social environment and health and delineating their underlying mechanisms will aid in supporting and strengthening overall efforts to improve population health outcomes within cities.
