The Virtue Map: Emotions and Virtues

2021
Following the establishment of the Virtue Map in Chap. 5, Martin contextualizes her new model within the recent emotional turn in journalism studies, providing insight into the nature of emotions and their function and role in relation to the construction of virtues. Building upon MacIntyre’s description of human beings as ‘essentially story-telling animals’, Martin argues that the ability of a journalist to convey the full emotional lives of those they are writing about is an integral part of creating a captivating narrative. The capacities of the six Virtue Map virtues of courage, empathy, honesty, responsibility, resilience and phronesis are explored and the extensive reporting skills and narrative devices the journalist uses to convey these virtues to readers are examined.
