First peoples: A welcome resource for Victorian schools

2014
When you enter the First Peoples exhibition in the Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre at Melbourne Museum, you are greeted by the word Wominjeka, which means 'welcome' in the languages of the Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung people of Melbourne. A large video screen slowly reveals the wonderfully diverse and striking panoramas that make up the state of Victoria, from alpine peaks to the sea, to desert country. You are immediately drawn to the wooden relief map that is dotted with carved cylindrical pegs that, when touched, speak a language you may never have heard before. Each one represents the more than 40 different language groups of the First Peoples of Victoria.
