4-halogenobenzoic acid trans-4'(trans-4"-alkylcyclohexyl)cyclohexyl ester

1980
NEW MATERIAL:4-Halogenobenzoic acid trans-4'(trans-4"-alkylcyclohexyl)cyclohexyl ester shown by the formula (X is F or Cl; R is 1W10C alkyl). EXAMPLE: 4-Fluorobenzoic acid trans-4'-(trans-4"-pentylcyclohexyl)cyclohexyl ester. USE: A liquid crystal compound. Useful for preparing a liquid crystal composition having a wide liquid crystal temperature. PROCESS: A 4-(trans-4'-alkylcyclohexyl)phenol is reduced in ethanol using a Raney nickel as a catalyst and separated from an isomer by recrystallization to give a trans- 4-(trans-4'-alkylcyclohexyl)cyclohexanol, which is reacted with a 4-halogenobenzoic acid chloride in the presence of pyridine, to give the desired compound shown by the formula.
